The
Baha'i Faith is the youngest of the world’s independent monotheistic religions. Founded in Iran in 1844, it now has more than 5 million adherents in 236 countries and territories. Baha'is come from nearly every national, ethnic and religious background, making the Baha'i Faith the second-most widespread religion in the world. |

Bahá'í membership in
the United States reflects the racial and cultural
diversity of the American population. Bahá’ís reside in
approximately 7,000 localities including more than 100
Indian reservations. There are approximately 149,000
Bahá’ís and over 1,100 local Spiritual Assemblies in the
United States. South Carolina, California, Texas,
Georgia and Illinois have the largest Bahá'í
populations.

The Bahá'í Faith was
first mentioned in the United States in 1893 by a
Presbyterian missionary at the World’s Parliament of
Religions held during the Columbian Exposition in
Chicago. The following year, Thornton Chase, a Chicago
insurance manager, became the first American Baha’i. By
the end of 1894 four other Americans had also become
